Tracing its lineage back to 1979 as the Fisheries and Marine Science Center of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM), the institution evolved into Kolej Universiti Sains dan Teknologi Malaysia (KUSTEM) in 2001 and was chartered as an autonomous full public university on 1 February 2007. Situated on a scenic coastal campus facing the South China Sea in Mengabang Telipot, Kuala Nerus, UMT commands world-class marine research assets including the 40-meter oceanographic research vessel RV Discovery, the renowned Pulau Bidong Marine Research Station, and the Lake Kenyir Freshwater Ecosystem Station.
