About Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (東京海洋大学 Tokyo Kaiyō Daigaku, colloquially known as TUMSAT or Kaiyodai), formed in 2003 through the unification of two historic century-old institutions — Tokyo University of Fisheries (東京水産大学, founded 1888) and Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine (東京商船大学, founded 1875 with deep navigation heritage dating back to Iwasaki Yataro and Sakamoto Ryoma) — is Japan’s only and foremost national university dedicated exclusively to oceanography, marine biology, sustainable fisheries, naval architecture, maritime safety, and global supply chain logistics. Operating two specialized waterfront campuses in Tokyo — the Shinagawa Campus in Minato Ward (housing the School of Marine Life Science, School of Marine Resources and Environment, the Whale Gallery, and Marine Science Museum) and the historic Etchujima Campus in Koto Ward (housing the School of Marine Technology, advanced ship navigation simulators, and the Imperial Meiji Maru sailing ship, a designated National Important Cultural Property) — TUMSAT commands worldwide maritime leadership. TUMSAT also operates world-renowned scientific ocean research and training vessels, including the Antarctic-exploring Umitaka Maru (海鷹丸) and the fisheries research ship Shinyo Maru (神鷹丸). With approximately 2,700 students including scholars from over 30 countries, TUMSAT offers standard statutory national university tuition (¥535,800/yr), comprehensive 50% to 100% tuition waivers, generous maritime corporate fellowships, and MEXT scholarship pathways.
