About The University Centre in Svalbard
Visit Official WebsiteThe University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS; Norwegian: Universitetssenteret på Svalbard AS) is the world's northernmost higher education and scientific research institution, established in 1993 and situated in Longyearbyen on the Arctic archipelago of Spitsbergen at 78° N latitude. Operating as a state-owned joint-stock corporation owned by Norway's four foremost research universities—the University of Oslo (UiO), the University of Bergen (UiB), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and UiT The Arctic University of Norway—UNIS provides an unprecedented natural laboratory for high-latitude polar investigation. Academic instruction and field research at UNIS are structured across four specialized scientific departments: Arctic Biology, Arctic Geology, Arctic Geophysics, and Arctic Technology, alongside the Arctic Safety Centre. Rather than awarding standalone degrees, UNIS delivers semester-long and summer research modules (from 10 to 60 Bologna ECTS credits) that integrate directly into Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral curricula at partner institutions across Norway, the European Union, North America, and worldwide. All instruction is delivered entirely in English by resident polar scholars and international guest professors. Because Svalbard is governed by the international Svalbard Treaty (Spitsbergen Treaty of 1920), UNIS maintains a strict zero-tuition policy: neither domestic Norwegian students nor international students from outside the EU/EEA pay statutory tuition fees. Students only cover the Arctic Student Welfare Organisation (Samskipnaden) semester fee (~NOK 670) and modest per diem food/lodging charges during overnight wilderness fieldwork. With state-of-the-art cold laboratories, high-tech ice-coring technology, marine research vessels, the Kjell Henriksen Auroral Observatory (KHO), and mandatory high-latitude safety survival training (polar bear defense, glacier crevasse rescue, and snowmobile navigation), UNIS offers a truly life-defining academic adventure in the High Arctic.
