About Shibaura Institute of Technology
Shibaura Institute of Technology (芝浦工業大学 - Shibaura Kōgyō Daigaku / 芝浦工大 - SIT), founded in 1927 by Dr. Shiro Arimoto as Tokyo Higher School of Industry and Commerce and chartered as a private university in 1949, is one of Japan’s most prestigious private science and technology institutions. Located in the heart of Tokyo and Greater Tokyo, SIT is the ONLY private science and engineering university selected by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for the prestigious Top Global University Project (Super Global University / Type B Global Traction). The university is a distinguished member of the "Tokyo 4 Technical Universities" (東京四工大 - Tokyo Yon Kōdai: Shibaura, Musashi, Tokyo City University, and Tokyo Denki University). SIT operates across three modern campuses: the flagship Toyosu Campus in Koto-ku, Tokyo (featuring the 14-story Centennial Main Building & Toyosu Research Tower on Tokyo Bay), the lush Omiya Campus in Saitama City (housing the College of Systems Engineering and Science and athletic grounds), and the Shibaura Campus in Minato-ku, Tokyo (the dedicated urban home of the renowned School of Architecture). Educating over 9,500 students, including more than 1,200 international students from over 60 countries, SIT is celebrated for its trailblazing global initiatives—notably the Innovative Global Program (IGP), an all-English undergraduate engineering curriculum, the English-based Master’s and Doctoral Courses in the Graduate School of Engineering and Science, and worldwide Global Project-Based Learning (gPBL) partnerships with over 200 partner universities globally. With top-ranked graduate employment rates, state-of-the-art robotics and architectural fabrication laboratories, and generous institutional scholarship programs including the SIT Scholarship for Foreign Graduate Students and Doctoral Fellowships, Shibaura Institute of Technology serves as a premier international engineering destination in Japan.
